In the fall of 2025, I paid my most recent visit to Mount Hope Cemetery, on the western side of Havre. Two posts in 2023 covered the basic history of what was the city’s first cemetery from the late 1880s. I will not repeat that information today.

My update centers on the western boundary of the cemetery where Japanese residents were buried in the first two decades of the 20th century. My earlier photos imdid not include details of several of these graves.

The single delineated family plot was that for the Hamaoka family. The father, marked as Y. Hamaoka, died in April 1913, a child died the next month. The wife/mother, listed as Mrs Y. Hamaoka, died two years later. My guess is that the wire fence and gate were placed around the graves in 1915.

Hamaoka was a clerk at the Oriental Trading Company in Havre. The Havre Promoter of May 2, 1913 noted that he and his wife had three children.

The next eight grave markers date from 1905-1909. They do not share a last name but may have been related or perhaps from the same city or village. Perhaps they were all associated with the Oriental Trading Company. A search in Havre newspapers through newspapers.com did not uncover any biographical information.
